All of these particular traits make imec to be a top-class employer. To strengthen this position as a leading player in our field, we are looking for those passionate talents that make the difference! Currently we are looking for a motivated R&D Engineer STT-MRAM (MTJ) for a contract of 2 years.

The job

To improve performance, dimensional scaling has consistently played a crucial role, which has led to faster and more power efficient devices. At present, the more conventional memory technologies, like SRAM, DRAM, and Flash, are running towards fundamental scaling limits, such that more advanced technologies will need to be developed.  One of the more promising alternatives today is Spin Torque Transfer Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM) for which imec has an extensive program running with several of its core partners. Using state of the art equipment in its 300mm production line, imec is determined to set new boundaries for future memory technologies.
The core element of STT-MRAM is the Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ), consisting of two ferromagnets separated by a thin insulator. Using spin polarized current, the magnetization of one of the ferromagnets can be switched, changing the electron tunnel resistance. Today, the complex multilayer MTJ stacks are being deposited by the most advanced PVD techniques, where control at the atomic level is of the utmost importance to enhance the device characteristics.
As an R&D engineer you will actively contribute to the development and optimization of the MTJ stacks starting from the definition of the experiment, through the deposition of the layers, down to the characterization of the MTJ properties. You will closely interact with the integration engineers to bring these layers to a fully functional integrated device level.

  • You have a PhD degree in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, or Engineering.
  • You are a hands-on person with a strong background in the deposition and characterization of magnetic thin films.
  • Knowledge of STT-MRAM and characterization of MTJs is a plus.
  • You are an enthusiastic team player.
  • You have an analytical mind, use a logical and well-structured approach, but can also think outside the box.
  • You are used to work with deadlines and can handle stress.
  • You have excellent reporting skills and are able to present scientific results (publications, conferences, seminars).
  • You can easily integrate in an international team.
  • Good English communication skills are required.

In exchange for your talent, passion and expertise, you will join a multicultural and high-tech company, with challenges there for the taking. Our flexible, progressive and informal working environment offers you a range of possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. This is your opportunity to contribute to the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow. imec supports and guides you in this process; not only with words but with concrete actions. Through imec.academy, our corporate university, we are actively investing in the further development of all our employees to assure their technical and personal growth. Your valuable contribution and that of your colleagues make imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of an attractive and competitive salary with many fringe benefits.
