The job

As a pioneer in nanoelectronics, imec brings smart chip technology to the world of healthcare. We leverage our expertise in chip design and technology to develop innovative tools for the life sciences, pharma R&D, clinical diagnostics, therapeutic and surgery, biopharma production and analytical biochemistry industries. We combine extensive chip manufacturing facilities and bio-lab infrastructure with world-renowned expertise in chip technology, MEMS, bio-electronics, sensors, photonics, imagers, microfluidics, and biosciences. This makes us the ideal development and manufacturing partner for a custom smart biochip solution, from early R&D, design and prototyping to volume manufacturing.

Your challenge:
We have grown to become a large and internationally recognized team creating new applications and their enabling systems, circuits, sensors, and algorithms. Our ambition is to further grow our business as well as our impact and to expand in new application and competence areas. As the first line business interface with customers and prospects, you are the one to capture as well as to create market  opportunities, define target markets and potential accounts. You deliver in terms of generated annual value.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Based on your excellent knowledge of the semiconductor and the medical/healthcare electronics markets, you will build and manage a portfolio of customers in this space.
  • You generate leads within these market segments and discover opportunities for collaboration.
  • Thanks to your technical and application knowledge, you can capture which imec innovations will enable customer requirements and you will oversee the resulting technical proposal creation with the technical teams.
  • You work in close cooperation with the program management and with the worldwide account managers to create high-value proposals.
  • You coordinate the business terms, legal and IP aspects of proposals by aligning with account management, business development, legal and IP in imec Leuven. You negotiate and finalize contracts with the customer.
  • You advise the program management regarding actions and (strategic) decisions on the research roadmap.
  • You represent imec at external trade shows and exhibitions.
  • You report to the business director of imec Smart Electronics unit.


You have a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Biomedical Engineering potentially enriched with a business degree. You have minimum 3 years experience in sales and/or business development for advanced technology, systems, applications, preferably in the semiconductor market. Experience in a technical-commercial function in a research or advanced development environment is a strong plus. You
are a strong and positive communicator, customer-oriented and diplomatic. At the same time, you are inquisitive, do not leave things open, and go for the most suitable process to close the deal. You can handle the administrative part of the business development job, including reporting, CRM, Meeting Minutes, Gap Analysis and other sales tools. You are a team player, working closely with the technical teams, legal and IP team and the regional account teams. You can extend your internal and external networks and to talk and confer on technical, legal and business related matters. You can adequately judge problem situations and opportunities, recognize priorities and act accordingly in a flexible manner.
You enjoy regular traveling worldwide; travel percentage is approximately 20%. You are fluent in English and willing to learn Dutch to a basic level.
